Background Information

BE BOP is the name of a dance performance inspired by a music movement bearing the same name. The movement originated in the 40s as a small revolution liberating music form from its strict traditionalist structure and influencing an overwhelming majority of fields in art. The movement was represented by a musician called Charlie Parker.

BE BOP is about life and phrasing... and how to phrase is a decision that a person makes for himself or herself. Sometimes it is just virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity. A person’s life resembles phrasing in music.
BE BOP is about improvisation without detailed preparation and in extreme concentration. Its melody is created by an ever changing structure. Snippets of emotion, forgotten experience and melodies, sexual motivation, old resignation, fears of the future and existence interrupted by extremes and its indescribable mysteries emerge in Be Bop.
In Be Bop people melted in sweet idleness end up in situations in which they are forced to become jointly aware of extremes served to them by their lives through their specific circumstances. And so they unwillingly find themselves in a deep cellar filled with fear where they do not quite manage to control their mutual and perhaps even pretended solidarity and cope with their own “Don Quixote-like characters”, exhibition, will for pleasures and basic instincts. Constrained by their characters, they improvise, phrase as they each like and search to find themselves in a place that they first escaped from together and to find something completely different, new and inevitable.
In this sense, BE BOP is an existential play.
