Performance Platform presents several guest performances by individual artists/companies like Emio Greco | PC, Nigel Charnock, Hiroaki Umeda and Kadir Memiş -- in addition to a selection of brand new productions by Turkish choreographers such as Alpaslan Karaduman, Handan Ergiydiren, Mihran Tomasyan, Esra Yurttut and Alper Marangoz.
Education Platform will house a daily average of 10-12 technique classes, masterclasses, workshops, coaching sessions, repertory work, etc. in four separate studios. Among the instructors and workshop leaders are Inaki Azpillaga, Elizabeth Corbett, Ted Stoffer, Bruno Caverna, Nigel Charnock, Vladimir Malakhov, Slava Samodurov and Kadir Memiş. Primarily concentrating on contemporary dance and classical ballet, Education Platform will also host other events specially devised for Dance Platform such as a mock audition by Lloyd Newson/DV8 Physical Theatre and a two-weeks workshop by Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods.
Choreography Platform: Showcasing a mixed selection of short-length works by Turkish artists, the platform will provide a hands-on breeding and exchange ground for local emerging artists and independent dance makers, who will be supported to work either by themselves or in cooperation with other colleagues in order to create a new piece.
Forum Platform will investigate the current state and future conditions of the art of dance in Turkey in general, paying special attention to issues of dance education, cultural management and criticism. It will incorporate a series of talks, seminars, panel discussions and working groups, all of which will pave the way towards a wide-scale Dance Congress marking the end of the Platform week.
DANCELab grants a number of dance schools/students an opportunity to spend some time with a foreign instructor/choreographer and present the results of this exchange in the form of a work-in-progress. It will also allow European choreographers/collectives such as Jack Gallagher, Matej Kejzar and BadCo. to work with Turkish professionals and collectives from the contemporary dance scene in Istanbul such as Istanbul Dance Theatre, RemDance Project Company, and [laboratuar] performance arts research and project lab.
Dance Platform Istanbul is a multi-track international festival event and residency project, conceived in accordance with the “dance platform” format, counterparts of which can frequently be seen in several notable European capitals. The project will host a series of individual events spread throughout the whole year between April-December 2010, in addition to a main program to take place between 15-22 September 2010. It will bring together all choreographers, directors, performers, designers, cultural managers, academicians, researchers, instructors and students working in the fields of contemporary dance and classical ballet in Turkey.
As the largest-scale dance-based project organized by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency's Theatre and Performing Arts Department, Dance Platform Istanbul aims at creating an international platform for developing new choreographies and creating new connections by means of an intensive and collective focus on the present and future state of dance in Turkey. Lasting eight days and taking modern/contemporary Dance and classical ballet as its basis, the project will be hosting renowned international guests, senior professional choreographers, side by side with free-lance choreographers and young dancers and dance-makers.
