After being a performer, mostly for François Raffinot at the Centre Chorégraphique du Havre, Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh founds Sui Generis Company in Le Havre in 1998.
If her “début” choreography registers a “figurative body” (Anthume ou la sensation du membre fantôme, 1998) which favors the singularity of each performer, the choreographer has progressively tackled more abstract work by means of themes as neurology or psychiatry (Texture/Composite, 1999, Sagen, 2001).
With décompositions (2003), Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh embarks upon a cycle of pieces (CROISéES 2004 ; White Light, 2005 ; ici/Per.For, 2006) which mark a very clear rupture with her preceding works. While the movements remain highly exacting, the principle of “repetition” at work from this point forth engenders reflections on rhythm and space.
This work, of a more abstract and contemplative nature, invites the spectator into a world of hypnotic character.
To go beyond the principles of choreography, while enlarging them through an exploration about the perception of time (fugue, memory), the choreographer regularly brings other disciplines into her work and engages in long-term artistic collaborations as with the composer Zeena Parkins, the visual artist Laurent Pariente and the writer Frédéric-Yves Jeannet.
Since 2007, Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh has begun a cycle of investigations principally based on musical composition (Aboli Bibelot…rebondi, 2007), while being equally ensconced in certain aspects of the history of painting (Eaux-fortes, 2007). As these interrogations unfold, they criss-cross and gather together her previous experiences, synthesizing them while systematically putting operational modes into play.
Currently, Vo-Dinh’s aspirations for her creations center around a choreography that questions figuration in abstraction, and places the performer at the heart of the creative process (Ad Astra, 2009).
Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh develops educational dancing activities for various audiences (students, teachers, professional dancers…) through training courses, conferences, open rehearsals. She also conducts genuine performances taylor-made for non professional dancers Double-jeux, Metz, 2001 ; Rainbow, Rennes, 2008).
Sui Generis Company is settled in Rennes since 2004, where it is in residency at Le Triangle, plateau pour la danse.
Sui Generis is funded by the Regional Department of Cultural Affairs in Brittany / the Ministry of Culture and Communication via a grant for aide à la compagnie conventionnée, the County Commission of Brittany, the Regional Council of Ile-et-Vilaine and the City of Rennes.
