"…I transform myself in advance into an image…"

Montage for Three is a choreography-of-images that takes its source material entirely from found photographs, both famous and obscure. The two dancers embody the photographs with the absurd and impossible aim of giving presence to something which is absent. They strive to erase the inherent sentimentality of the photographs in order to see what lies beneath the nostalgia. The living/moving/present bodies confront the mechanical/static/reproduced bodies until the two forms begin to exchange roles. The still images begin to take on a life of their own, as the dancers begin to serve as a trigger for the viewer's memory.

Background Information

Daniel Linehan previously worked as a dancer and choreographer in New York before moving to Brussels, where he attended the Research Cycle at PARTS. As a performer, he has worked with Miguel Gutierrez and Big Art Group, among other artists. He has collaborated with Michael Helland on multiple duet projects, which have been presented in New York, Philadelphia, and Montréal. He was also a 2007-2008 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence. Linehan’s own choreographic work is intent on softly obscuring the line that separates dance from everything else. His choreography has been presented at numerous venues in New York, France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and elsewhere.
