Şehr’ü Evlâd’üz-Ziyan {SEZ} is “a belated fantasy-document on urban themes”, integrating elements of dance, theatre, sound, set and still-image. The piece engages with architectural geography and texture of the capital city of Ankara in its contemporary state, through the eyes and experience of a generation that has come to life during and after the major political events of 1980s.
Loss is at the center of {SEZ}. In one way or another, each strand is related to a, somewhat existential, loss of some kind (of contact, of memory, of ground, of bodily coordination, of security etc.) where a flooded city becomes the site of confronting such loss. A constant struggle between the attempt to erase everything and the impulse to leave traces is underway. References to modernization process of the Republic are another constant throughout the piece. Delving particularly into 1980s, prominent both as a radical breaking point and as a decade in which conservative and developmental policies run side by side, {SEZ} cannot avoid reflecting upon the impact of period’s politics on the country.

It is in pursuit of an experimental aesthetics within which diverse forms and means of artistic expression wear each other out. In this regard, it pushes the boundaries of – or breaks, changes and re-establishes the relationship between – dualities such as thought and practice, body and mind, time and space, dance and theatre, film and performance, text and movement, sound and image, design and implement, spectator and spectacle, creator and performer, performer and technician, etc. It seeks a critical practice immanent to art and an artistic practice immanent to critique…
