Zoi Dimitriou / In the process of...

A new duet drawing upon Conlon Nancarrow’s compositional structures and a study around the effect of film figure movement on genre recognition.

Looking at composition as process, Dimitriou attempts to bring together the highly rational with the irrational in a freely moving continuity and to weight the quality of the human body toward that of objects, words/language, sound and light. Manipulating movement parameters and playing with the central myth of the ‘quest’ underlying the basic archetypical themes, a play of two emerges as a series of short intermezzi to a story never told.

For the past four years of her choreographic career, Zoi Dimitriou has invested her time and creative energy to develop the high quality work that has awarded her the 2008 Robin Howard Foundation Award and culminated in high-profile performances at the Clore Studio Theatre at the ROH, the Bonnie Bird Theatre, The International Dance Festival of Kalamata in Greece, Spring Loaded 2007 and 2008, the Athens-Epidaurus Festival 2008 , the Milano Incontra La Grecia Festival at the Piccolo Teatro and the 2009 Europe in Motion Festival in Bucharest. The body of her work consists of two soli: ‘Can You See Me?’ (2006), ‘Dromi’ (2007), two duets: ‘Goddesses in Exile’ (2008), ‘In the process of….’ (Work in progress-2009) and the commissions: ‘Limen’ (2007) for 9 dancers of The Greek National Ballet Company and ‘You’re too short for that gesture’ (2007) for Shift, the Resident Youth Dance Company at The Place.

All of her work is characterized by a deep investment in the expressive possibilities inherent in the body in motion but also explores the use of objects, text, sound, and light and plays with the theatrical conventions and notions of presentation and representation.
