Aerowaves Spring Forward

Ljubljana 20.1.1
25-27 March 2011
Dance for changing times

What is it?
20 dance events performed live on 4 stages in 3 days

Is it a Competition?
It’s a competition to be invited amongst this year’s 500 or so Aerowaves artists , but there are no prizes. So no, it’s not exactly a Competition.

Is it a Platform?
It’s a promotional opportunity, and many dance presenters will be there from around Europe and beyond, but it is neither representational nor national. So no, it’s not exactly a Platform.

Is it Professional Development?
All the 70 or so dancers will see each others’ work and make a short piece together whilst
in Ljubljana, but there will be no courses or workshops. So no, it’s not exactly Professional
Development.

Is it a Festival?
It’s a celebration of new short dance works, the most promising identified by the Partners of the Aerowaves network and its Director, but any artist in Europe can apply. So no, it’s not exactly a Festival.

So what is it?
It’s Aerowaves Spring Forward, 15 years in the making, nothing else like it. The first. Next year in Italy.

What’s in a name?
Spring (noun, season) Forward: Re-birth, new growth in motion
Spring (verb, action) Forward: Artists eager to take the stage and new opportunities
Spring Forward, Fall Back: common expression in the USA to remind you which way to
change the clocks
Spring Forward is at the end of March when we leap an hour, marking a change in time

Why Ljubljana?
Easy to get to, beautiful compact capital, lively local dance scene and audience, easy walking
distance between four good stages for dance: Plesni PTL, Stara Elektrana, Cankarjev Dom and Spanski Borci.

Why now?
Because in a time of economic retrenchment, artists need new opportunities to seek
collaborations and pitch their ideas against different cultures and audiences.

If it’s a celebration, will there be parties?
Yes, and receptions with delicious food, and new friends and old, and good conversation
while walking between venues, and late breakfasts, and the joy of discovery, and the shock of
recognition – that yes, that’s the way the world moves us now.
